I started HR Habitat working in self employed projects (with my employers permission) a few years ago. Then, I finally officially set the company up a year later with a unique vision for HR in mind.
Almost a decade ago, I had the boss from hell. A narcissistic business owner who bullied me through my miscarriage and harassed me when I inevitably resigned. I realised, even in my position I couldn’t expect business leaders to fulfil their obligations- they just didn’t know what those were. Agreeing and saying “yes sir, no sir” to HR just meant they held up their obligations because they had to, but didn’t really understand why. If they did, maybe it would have saved me all of that drama?
I didn’t give myself time to deal with all of that (what later became) trauma. I jumped straight into another job trying to build my HR career. Throughout my career I heard different business leaders say the following things to different women;
“Hiring women comes with sacrifice”
“If you’re pregnant you should have bought two train tickets!”
+ so much more.
I realised, that the issue was around the education piece. The understanding of different people was the only way to stop behaviours that were discriminatory.
So, I started planning for my masterclasses in leadership, diversity etc incorporated into HR laws. They were so good that we were going to offer them to clients of my employer the time!
Fast forward to now,
I’ve got huge goals, a vision to educate leaders on their obligations, on leadership skills etc align our objectives that help inform HR strategies. So far, I’m doing this through risk reports, webinars, workshops etc.
An example is one of my charity clients who had a messy dismissal they needed assistance with. They had a goal, and my job was to present the options and it’s likely associated risks. I did this through educating them on issues, risks, laws etc in an engaging report (with graphs and illustrations because I’m such a nerd 🤓). They made the right decision and really appreciated my investment in making them aware of repercussions.
I’m probably biased when I say this, but HR Habitat Ltd is really the best approach to HR.
