You Might Already Have Access to the Healthcare You’ve Been Putting Off

You Might Already Have Access to the Healthcare…

"I've been meaning to get my back looked at for months."

"My neck is constantly tight, but I can't justify spending the money on treatment."

"I've been thinking about seeing a physio, but I'll wait until things settle down financially."

Sound familiar?

For many employees, these thoughts are becoming increasingly common.

When household costs are rising, and people are being more careful with their spending, things like physiotherapy, massage, injury treatment or regular tension-release sessions can quickly become something that gets pushed down the priority list.

You tell yourself you'll deal with it next month...

Then next month becomes six months...

The problem is that the pain doesn't always disappear.

Sometimes it gets worse.

And something that could potentially have been addressed with early support becomes a much bigger problem.

But here's something many employees don't realise...

You may already have access to healthcare through your employer.

And you may not need to pay for it yourself.

Many businesses now offer health and wellbeing benefits as part of their employee package. These can include private medical insurance, health cash plans, physiotherapy, mental health support, GP services, health assessments, counselling and other forms of wellbeing support.

Yet having a benefit and knowing you have it are two very different things.

Recent UK research found that only 44% of employees felt they had a good understanding of the health and wellbeing benefits available to them.

Even more strikingly, 34% of employers acknowledged that their staff were not aware of, or did not understand, the benefits available to them.

More recent research in 2026 found that:

  • 35% of employees said uncertainty about what their workplace health benefits cover is a barrier to using them.
  • 33% worried there could be hidden costs.
  • 30% said they weren't sure how to access their benefits.
  • 20% weren't aware of the health and wellbeing support available through their employer.

So the issue isn't necessarily that businesses aren't providing support.

It's that employees aren't always being shown how to use it.

Don't assume your benefits are just for emergencies.

One of the biggest misconceptions around workplace healthcare is that you should only use it when something is seriously wrong.

But preventative healthcare can be just as valuable.

That niggling shoulder you've had for six months.

The lower back pain that appears after every long day at your desk.

The neck tension that has gradually become part of your daily routine.

The knee you've been compensating for since an old injury.

The constant muscle tightness from training, working or sitting at a desk all day.

These aren't necessarily problems you should simply learn to live with.

Your health benefits may be there to help you address them.

And importantly, seeking support earlier can help prevent a manageable problem from becoming something that affects your ability to work, exercise or enjoy your life.

The business benefits too

This isn't just about employees getting something for free.

It's about creating a healthier workforce.

Musculoskeletal problems remain a significant issue for UK workers. HSE figures for 2024/25 recorded 511,000 workers suffering from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, contributing to millions of working days lost through work-related illness and injury.

And the impact isn't limited to the person experiencing the problem.

When someone is working through pain, fatigue, stress or poor health, their productivity and engagement can be affected.

They may still be at work.

But they aren't necessarily performing at their best.

That's where workplace healthcare becomes more than an employee perk.

It's an investment in the workforce.

But are businesses communicating these benefits properly?

This is where I think there is a huge opportunity.

Employers can spend significant amounts of money creating impressive employee benefit packages.

But if employees don't understand what they have, how to access it, or what it can be used for, the benefit loses much of its value.

Research from Drewberry found that only 36% of employees said they fully understood their benefits, while 67% said they either didn't know about or didn't use additional services attached to their core benefits.

And research from Unum found a significant gap between employers and employees when it comes to perceived value.

67% of employers believed their benefits package had positively impacted employee wellbeing.

Only 31% of employees agreed that their benefits had helped them proactively look after their health.

That's a huge disconnect.

So, employees: check what you already have.

Before deciding that you can't afford to see a physio...

Before continuing to put off that massage...

Before accepting that your back, neck or shoulder will "just have to wait"...

Check your employee benefits.

Speak to HR.

Look at your employee benefits portal.

Check your private medical insurance.

Look at your health cash plan.

Find out whether physiotherapy, complementary therapies, health assessments or other treatments are included.

You may already have access to the support you've been considering paying for yourself.

And if you're an employer, don't assume your employees know what's available.

Tell them.

Explain it.

Make it easy to understand.

Remind them regularly.

Because a benefit that nobody knows about isn't really delivering its full potential.

Healthcare shouldn't be something employees only think about when they're already struggling.

The best workplace wellbeing strategies don't simply respond to problems.

They help people address them early.

For employees, that can mean getting the support they need without having to make another difficult financial decision.

For employers, it can mean healthier, happier and more productive teams.

And for both?

It's about making healthcare more accessible when people actually need it.

At Elevated Movement, we believe workplace wellbeing should be practical, accessible and genuinely useful.

We support businesses and their employees through services including physiotherapy, workplace massage, health checks, movement sessions, exercise at work, yoga and nutritional workshops.

Because sometimes the biggest barrier to looking after your health isn't a lack of support.

It's simply not knowing that the support is already there.

When was the last time you checked what healthcare benefits your employer provides?

And if you're an employer...

Do your employees actually know what's available to them?
